Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
