Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
